WHAT TO EXPECT FROM BSU DURING FRESHERS

Okay let’s be real… we’re all a bit tired of lockdown, aren’t we? But we are all also a little bit anxious and on edge about what might be coming next. Will we have to go back to watching countless hour of Netflix? Or is the call of the dancefloor finally enough to pull us back in for the Brighton Freshers 2021 experience!

At Brighton Students’ Union, we are doing everything we can to ensure that we provide with you the best Freshers experience possible. We would love to offer a safe and in-person Freshers line-up for you all ~ and whilst we can’t predict the future, we can keep you in the loop with our latest plans.

Here’s what you can expect from Brighton Students’ Union during Freshers’ and the first term:

EVENTS

We have currently planned to hold a mixture of both online and face-to-face events for you to get to know each other (and BSU), and should the situation change, we will alter our schedule and update our social media platforms to notify you of these changes.

The Union and the University must abide by Government regulation, but we also have a responsibility to make sure that all students and staff remain safe and healthy. That means not putting anyone in harm’s way or creating situations where people may put themselves or others at risk. We’ll continue to do what is best for Brighton students during the Freshers’ period.

We have an exclusive events Instagram setup now for you to get all the latest details and news about what might be happening with events such as: Halloween, Freshers, and even future events that are yet to be unveiled… give it a follow: BSU Freshers 2021 (@subrighton.events) • Instagram photos and videos

COMMUNITY

Community is a huge part of what Sufia, Jenniver, Hadi, Rayan, and the Students’ Union want to help you feel. It is an integral part of University life when you join, and we are here to make you feel like you belong. We have lots of societies, campaigns, and activities for you to get involved in.

During Freshers’ we will introduce all the activities, campaigns, and groups that you can join throughout the year through our Freshers Fair. We are also hoping to continue our virtual offering from last year so that those of you who can’t be with us in person don’t miss out on the opportunity to sign up to all the things we will be showcasing.

More details of this will be released in September, until then you can visit the Activities section of our website to find out what you might be interested in joining ahead of the event itself: Activities (brightonsu.com)

WELLBEING

Freshers can be a lot. If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed, our amazing BSU Support team may be able to help. They provide a free and confidential advice service whilst you’re studying at Brighton. Worried about reaching out? You can also access plenty of online resources on the BSU website, including resources about COVID-19, anxiety, accommodation, academic studies, and mental health.

Whatever you are worried about, we are here to support you during your time at Brighton. If you are finding things more difficult, you can also talk to the University Student Services team, who provide a range of counselling and support services as well.

LOOK OUT FOR THE COURSE REPS

Course Reps remain a huge part of representation at Brighton. Each year, students are elected by members of their course to represent their views and opinions when it comes to their degree. For example, if you are unhappy with how a module is being taught, you can raise this with your course rep, and they will then feed this back to us.

This year is no different, and the scheme will still be running to ensure that you have support and guidance with any issues you may have.

If you’re interested in becoming a Course Rep, why not chat to us by emailing coursereps@brighton.ac.uk

The one thing we want you to remember, is that we are here to support and represent you, even if our offices on campus are closed. Whether you engage with us on social media, or drop us an email – the BSU team will be on hand to offer you any help or advice that you need.

We are very excited to welcome you all to Brighton later this month and wish you the very best of luck in your new academic adventure.
