We’re sure you’re going to have an amazing time at university, and whilst it might seem daunting at times, that’s what we’re here for – we’re here to make your student life better at the University of Brighton!
Did you know you automatically become a member of Brighton Students’ Union when you enrol at the University of Brighton? The SU are an independent organisation from the University, offering you support and guidance as well as opportunities to get involved with sports teams, societies and the issues that matter to you.
Here is a quick overview of some of our services and how we work to make your student life better:
Full-time Officers:
There are four elected officers, as elected by all University of Brighton students, to represent you and your views for the year. Each officer has a lead campus that they represent, so why not take a quick look to see which Officer you might find popping up on your campus?
Sufia Begum – President – The President is the lead spokesperson for external media for Brighton Students' Union and sits on the Board of Governers with the Education Officer. The president sits on a wide range of University Committees to represent the student voice at the highest level.
Jenniver Girgawi – Education Officer – The Education Officer sits on the Board of Governers with the President and is the main liason between the schools and the students' union. They also sit on a wide range of University Committees to represent the student voice and campaigns for key academic issues that students face.
Hadi Hassoun – Postgraduate Officer – The Postgraduate Officer is responsible for the representation of students on issues affecting postgraduate students. They consult with postgraduate students and develop policies, actions and campaigns informed by students’ needs and concerns.
Rayan Badrie – Activities Officer – The Activities Officer focuses on the development of Societies, Sports Clubs, Student Media and RAG. They also sit on the University Academic Board and Sustainability Board to represent the student voice.
BSU Support: BSU Support are here to help you with any problems you may face during your time at University. This could be a range of things including cases of academic misconduct, mitigating circumstances and appeals. If you’re ever having an issue it’s worth giving them a call because they often have the answer!
This year, they have even introduced an online appointment booking system – which means you get seen faster, with peace of mind knowing that you have the flexibility and comfort of sorting this out from the comfort of your home.
Societies: Brighton SU ensure that all societies in the University are getting the support that they need. We often hear that joining a society is the best thing that people have done whilst they’re at university, so we try and encourage students to find a society that they love and get as involved as possible.
You can find a full list of our societies here OR create one of your own if you don’t find anything you’re interested in.
Sports: We also work with Sport Brighton so that you have a range of sports teams to join! And you can get involved in the Parklife programme to try out activities for just £1. There are plenty of opportunities throughout the year to get involved with them, including: Varsity, the Sports Awards, and our newest Give it a Go programme.
Student Voice: The Student Voice team represent you and campaign to change things that students are unhappy with. Alongside this they also run the annual Students’ Union Elections. This is the team that you need to talk to if you’re wanting to enforce change within the University or become a Course Rep.
Want to start your own petition? Want to make us aware of issues that matter to you? Or, are you unhappy with your course and the services being provided to you by the University? The Student Voice team are on hand to ensure that your voice is heard loud and clear.
They want to hear feedback from you all year round so look out for them on campus or online to use your student voice.
Events (Including FRESHTIVAL): We host a number of events throughout the year for all students to get involved with including our Freshers’ Fortnight (FRESHTIVAL) Halloween, Garden Party and Union Awards. There are also a number of other events throughout the year in our outlets and around Brighton and Eastbourne for you to get involved with.
Make sure you follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to see any new announcements.
New for this year, we have an events Instagram – which means you can get filtered updates and news on all things events without the faff! Pretty neat.
SU Outlets: Our SU outlets are across our campuses and stock a range of food and drinks to suit your every need. Whether you are looking for a quick snack in between lectures, equipment and official UoB merchandise, or a meal after a long day in the library – we’ve got something for you.
Checkout what latest meal deal offers we have on to get the very best value for money. Fun fact, every penny you spend in an SU shop or outlet goes straight back into your student experience. So you can eat that slice of cake happily knowing that you’ve just contributed to making your Students’ Union even better.
Engagement Teams: Our Engagement teams are on every campus to help you with your queries and make your day a lot easier! You can head to your campus reception with any issues you may be having and our friendly team will do their best to help you. Just looking for the BSU branding on your campus, or visit our website for more information on where to find us.
Head Office: We also have a lot going on in our head office: we have teams for finance, communications and HR operations. They are behind the scenes making sure that everything runs smoothly.
